I have been walking into SM Home for…practically my whole life, really. But these days, I do it sometimes for myself and sometimes for clients, picking up everything from serving bowls to storage bins to that one throw pillow that ends up being exactly right for a mood board I’ve been wrestling with. I know the rhythm of it. I know the layout logic, the price points, the seasonal rotations. So when I was invited to the Makati flagship reopening last May 7, I went in with the comfortable confidence of someone who already knows the place.
But the store I walked into was wildly different.
The SM Home Makati that reopened this week is the result of what the brand is calling its most complete transformation in the store’s history, and walking through it, I knew instantly that it wasn’t just marketing language.
Janice T. Yang, Business Unit Head of SM Home, put it simply at the launch: “Filipinos have always known that home is more than a place. It is a sanctuary. It is where family breathes, where life is organized, where comfort is made. What changes today is how seriously we commit to serving it.”
If you have been putting off a trip because you assumed it was the same store you visited two years ago, let this be the thing that changes your mind. For anyone still figuring out where to shop home decor in Manila without blowing a renovation budget, this flagship is now one of the most compelling answers to that question.
The store has been reorganized around eight living zones covering the kitchen, dining room, living room, bedroom, bathroom, storage, laundry, and a gift registry. The difference between this approach and a traditional department store layout is that you instantly know you’re not just browsing shelves within a specific product category. The way it’s laid out makes you feel as if you are actually moving through a version of a home, one room at a time. And the question the store is asking you is not “what do you need?” but “what could this look like for you?”
What makes the execution genuinely impressive, from a design standpoint, is the merchandise styling. Each zone has been built around a deliberate color story, and the palette transitions between sections are gradient and considered in a way that takes real skill to pull off at retail scale. The earth tones of the living and dining areas give way to softer, more neutral bedroom arrangements, and the darker, more dramatic decor section anchors the whole floor without overwhelming it. Whoever was responsible for the visual merchandising here understood that color coordination is not just decoration, but architecture.
New brand partnerships are woven throughout, with KitchenAid, Breville, Hario, Don Bellini, Bonna, Serta, and HiEssence all arriving as part of the flagship’s renewed offer. There is also a gallery of contemporary local art integrated into the living room zone, which is one of the details that stuck with me most, because it signals something about what SM Home is trying to say about Filipino taste and what it deserves to be surrounded by.

And then there is the tableware, which I will not pretend to be neutral about. The dinnerware selection alone is worth the trip, and Manila has no shortage of home stores to compare it against. There are pieces in that section that I would have expected to find at a specialty home store at two or three times the price, and the range spans everything from clean, minimal everyday sets to boldly patterned pieces with real personality and craft behind them.
This is the part of SM Home that has always made it one of the best places to shop for home decor in Manila, the proof that beautiful, considered living does not require a prohibitive budget, and the new Makati store leans into that promise harder than ever.
SM Home is open now at its flagship store at SM Makati. If you have not been in a while, it is worth going again. The store has grown into a clearer point of view about what Filipino home living can look like, and for anyone building or refreshing a home right now, that point of view is worth spending some time with.
