Did you buy a house or condo unit in a new neighborhood development? These homes have a lot to offer: They put a roof over your head, provide great energy efficiency, and lack decades of accumulating structural problems.

However, one issue plagues uniform housing, whether in the city or in the suburbs: Every home looks extremely alike. This is to save cost, labor, and time during the building process, but it also results in potentially uninspiring living spaces that don’t stand out among their neighbors.

If you live in a cookie-cutter home but want to make it more unique, we’re here to help. Below, we review nine upgrades that will transform your living space from the inside out. Each idea is DIY-friendly, so you can tackle these projects even on a budget. They also won’t take months to accomplish—just a weekend and maybe a pair of helping hands. Even if you’re strapped for time, you can still elevate your home’s appeal and individuality. Let’s get started, shall we?

1. Add character with statement light fixtures

Pendant lights add warmth to this cool white contemporary kitchen we worked on during the pandemic.

Start simple by swapping out builder-grade fixtures for something with personality. For example, hang a dramatic pendant light in the kitchen or an elegant chandelier in the dining room.

Thrift stores, antique shops, and online marketplaces are veritable treasure troves for unique light fixtures. Many vintage pieces just need rewiring, which is simpler than you might think. YouTube tutorials can guide you through the process, or you can hire an electrician for the electrical work while handling the aesthetic choices yourself.

2. Create custom built-in storage on a budget

Bookshelves from a retail store can be made to look like custom built-ins in your home.

Built-ins can add elevated storage, but sometimes these features can be expensive to pursue. However, there are plenty of budget and renter-friendly ways to create DIY built-ins.

One way to tackle this project is to elevate basic cabinets (like something from IKEA) with trim and paint to create the appearance of costly built-in units. Billy bookcases, for instance, can become stunning floor-to-ceiling libraries with some peel-and-stick crown molding and strategic styling.

3. Install unique handrails for stairways

A small detail that can make a large difference in any condo or home is a customized and unique handrail. Whether your condo has front steps or a staircase to another floor, installing a new custom handrail is simple and can be cost-effective. Wood handrails with interesting brackets, sleek cable railings, or wrought iron designs can all completely change your home’s personality.

Choose materials and styles that complement your home’s architecture while adding your personal touch. You can order premade rails or get the materials you want cut to size at your local hardware store. The former is much more time-efficient.

4. Transform walls with creative paint techniques

We spruced up the look of this boring elevatory lobby entrance in this condo development with wallpaper, wall trim, and green paint.

Anyone can paint a room, but you can take it a step further with unique color schemes, patterns, and textures. Maybe you use stencils to achieve professional-looking patterns or painter’s tape to create clean lines for geometric designs.

You might also consider painting just the lower half of the walls in a bold color and then adding chair rail molding (which we’ll talk more about later). The darker colors on the bottom sections hide scuffs and wear as the lighter colors above keep rooms feeling open. This classic technique works especially well in hallways and dining rooms.

5. Upgrade cabinet hardware throughout your home

Changing out hardware instantly elevates the look of your existing cabinetry.

Factory-made cabinet pulls and knobs are hardly ever special. By changing this hardware throughout your home, you can make a subtly impactful change that takes only a few hours to complete.

Replace basic hardware with statement pieces that reflect your style. Maybe you want leather pulls or knobs with a pretty painted design on the front. Maybe you want the same shape of your current hardware pieces but in a different, higher-end material like copper.

Just make sure you measure existing holes before shopping to avoid drilling new ones. Also, many hardware pieces can cover larger holes if you want to upgrade to bigger pulls.

6. Design a gallery wall that tells your story

Displaying prints, artwork, or even personal favorites on your wall is one way of surrounding yourself with things you love.

Empty walls feel institutional, but they’re so full of potential! You can’t go wrong with a gallery wall featuring family photos, artwork, mirrors, and meaningful objects.

You might feel overwhelmed trying to fit so many elements on such a large area, so here’s a tip: Plan the arrangement on the floor before hanging anything on the walls. Cut paper templates matching your frame sizes to test arrangements before you drill any holes. Start with larger pieces as anchors, then fill in the layout with smaller items. Leave consistent spacing between pieces, and carry one element (like color or frame style) throughout the display for cohesion.

7. Create architectural interest with molding

Molding is essentially ornamentation for your walls. It includes textured panels or strips that frame, structure, and build out a room. Crown molding (also called cornice), chair rails, and wainscoting are three popular types that all add the architectural details cookie-cutter homes often lack. You can buy these features in the form of premade molding from home improvement stores.

For homeowners who want more texture than simple trim can provide, wall panels can also help a plain room feel more custom. Materials like wood, beadboard, brick, or stone veneer wall panels add depth to feature walls, fireplace areas, entryways, or small accent corners without requiring a full renovation. This type of update works especially well in cookie-cutter homes because it gives one wall a stronger focal point while keeping the rest of the room clean and balanced. It also lets homeowners add personality without changing the entire layout or buying all-new furniture. Even a small textured section can make a basic room feel more designed and finished.

8. Build window seats for extra storage and charm

We designed these custom shelves and window seat for one of our eDesign projects in Sierck-les-Baines, France.

Do you have a window in your home with nothing beneath it?

Turn it into a nook for relaxing and organizing by building a simple box frame underneath, adding a hinged top for storage, and finishing with cushions and pillows. This creates both seating and hidden storage for seasonal items, books, household supplies, and so forth.

9. Install floating shelves for display and function

We added floating shelves to this basic TV wall in one of our condo projects that was turned into an Airbnb unit.

Floating shelves replace bulky furniture while providing display space for books, plants, and small decorative objects. You can use these shelves to showcase collections, store frequently used items, or add greenery throughout your home.

Buy your shelves online or at your local home goods store. Get a few different lengths for variety. When you decide where to put them up, make sure to stagger heights for visual interest. And don’t forget to check for studs in your home’s walls! If possible, drill into these studs to increase each shelf’s load capacity.
