What's a color palette, anyway?

I previously shared how making a design plan turned our home and client projects from painful experiences into that of pure joy. One crucial part of that plan is creating a color board that guides our choices and ensures harmony in my space.

Now, when we talk about “COLOR,” we mean all the shades and hues that give life to your space, including:

  • Paint colors on walls, ceilings, and all other painted surfaces (which is actually also a type of finish)
  • Soft furnishings like curtains, rugs, linens, and fabrics
  • Dominant colors from artworks, photographs, or decorative objects

On the other hand, “FINISH” covers various elements, such as:

  • Again, paint colors on walls, ceilings, and all other painted surfaces
  • Wall coverings like wallpaper, murals, or other treatments
  • Flooring materials like tiles, wood, or wall-to-wall carpet
  • Metallic surfaces on hardware, light fixtures, metal furniture, door knobs, and cabinetry
  • Any surface where materials other than paint are used

Are color palette ideas for the home needed?

You might wonder why a color palette is necessary when updating your home. Well, it’s not just about aesthetics; it’s about creating a cohesive and harmonious living environment. Here’s why a well-thought-out color palette is essential:

Harmony

A color palette ensures that all the colors and finishes in your space work together seamlessly. No more clashing or mismatched elements.

Visual flow

It guides the eye and creates a natural flow from one area of your home to another. It’s like storytelling through design.

.

Personal expression

Your color palette is a canvas for expressing your personality and style. It’s a reflection of you and your family’s tastes and preferences

Avoid costly mistakes

Having a color palette reduces the risk of costly design mistakes. You won’t have to repaint walls or return furniture that doesn’t fit.

Efficiency

With a clear plan, you’ll save time and effort during the design process. No more second-guessing or last-minute decisions.

Creating your color palette

To ensure your space looks cohesive and harmonious, you can follow my footsteps and create a color board using a free digital tool like Canva. This board helps you:

  1. Select Neutral Colors: Find 1 or 2 neutral colors as the base (white shades work well).
  2. Explore Accent Colors: Discover several accent colors to use on walls, furniture, or as visual interest throughout the space.
  3. Mix Wood Finishes: Aim for at least 2 wood finishes to prevent a monochromatic look.
  4. Balance Metallic Finishes: Ensure metal elements complement your space’s overall vibe.
  5. Incorporate Various Textures: Include natural finishes, upholstery textures, and patterns.

By visualizing all these elements on your color and finishes board, you can make informed decisions about your space. No more second-guessing if that wall color will match your furniture or if those pendant lamps will fit the overall look.

Creating your color board is easy. Just upload photos of your chosen finishes and color swatches to the Canva template (you’ll need to sign up for a free Canva account). Then, feel free to add or remove elements as you see fit.
